Alyssa Rivas Career Day Allows Methodist to Take One From N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Methodist University softball returned to USA South Athletic Conference play, while concluding a six-game road stand, with a doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon. After jumping out to a 7-1 advantage, the Battling Bishops required a walk-off to beat the Monarchs 8-7 in the first game before coming up short in game two, with the Monarchs winning 5-4.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 8-7; Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 5-4
Records: Methodist 18-18 (8-8 USA South); N.C. Wesleyan 20-16 (10-6)
Location: EdgeField; Rocky Mount, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • The first 16 batters, between both teams, would be retired before the first hit of the game was recorded, a single in the bottom of the third by N.C. Wesleyan. That base hit was the start of six Battling Bishop runs to score in the inning, four of which coming on a grand slam.
  • In the fourth, a solo homerun by Rachel Blanchard gave Methodist its first run of the game. N.C. Wesleyan was able to match the run in the bottom half of the inning to go back up by six, 7-1.
  • The Monarchs would tally six runs across the sixth & seventh innings to tie the scoreboard up at 7-7. In the sixth, Blanchard brought in one run on an infield single then Sydney Sizemore drove in two more Methodist runs on her 2-RBI base hit.
  • Another infield single, this time by Alexandra Edwards, plated the fifth Monarch run, during the seventh inning. A couple of batters later, Blanchard launched her second homer of the game, a two-run shot.
  • The Battling Bishops led the bottom of the seventh off with a double before the game-winning base hit was registered to clinch the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Once again N.C. Wesleyan got on the board with the first two runs of ballgame, in the fourth inning. An RBI triple scored the opening run followed by a sacrifice fly to record the other Battling Bishop run.
  • Methodist started the fifth inning with the first three batters reaching base, via two hits and a N.C. Wesleyan error. Up to the plate next for the Monarchs was Hannah Lovick, who had a sac fly to score the first run for her team. Methodist then took a 4-1 lead following a three-run homerun by Alyssa Rivas.
  • A pair of Battling Bishop runs in sixth inning knotted up the game once more, until Rivas came through again, in the seventh, for the Monarchs with an RBI single.
  • After a double to begin the bottom of the seventh, the next two N.C. Wesleyan batter flew out. A Methodist error and a walk would load the bases for the Battling Bishops but Monarchs own Emma Neeley stayed posed and got the final batter to pop out.
NUMBERS
  • With her two homeruns performance in game one, Blanchard ties a single-game record. She is the seventh Monarch in program history to register two long balls in one contest.
  • Rivas had a career day in the second game. Her three hits match a career-high, with one of the hits being her first collegiate homerun, and her four RBIs were a career-high.
  • Outside of Blanchard and Rivas, Edwards had a solid day at the plate for Methodist. She would go 5-for-7 between both games and came around to score three times.
UP NEXT
Methodist only has two games left in the regular season and both will be played on Saturday, at home, as the Monarchs host Salem College in two USA South bouts. The first game is scheduled for 1 PM, and before the contest Methodist will be honoring its class of 2024.
