BREVARD, N.C. In an elimination game, Methodist University baseball took on Pfeiffer University for the second time in the 2024 USA South Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon, which was played on the campus of Brevard College. A nightmare sixth inning for the Monarchs would be their downfall as they lost 12-9 to the Falcons and were eliminated from the conference tournament.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 12-9
Records: Methodist 21-22, Pfeiffer 21-20
Location: Gil Coan Field; Brevard, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A sacrifice fly in the third inning was how Pfeiffer struck first on the scoreboard.
- An inning later, Methodist registered its first three runs of the ballgame to take a 3-1 lead. Following a walk and a wild pitch, Banks Hartman found himself on second base when Brandon Mauger came up to the plate. A Mauger base hit through the left side of the infield scored Hartman to tie the game. A few batters later, the Monarchs had runners on second and third until a Tristen Melvin double down the left field line allowed both runners to cross home.
- A busy fifth inning saw five runs being scored, two by the Falcons and three by Methodist. A pair of Monarch hits put runners on the corners, then the next three Methodist batters recorded an RBI to take a 6-4 advantage. First, Caleb Rogers gave himself up on a bunt to allow one run to score. Up next was Mauger, who tripled down the right field line and eventually scored on a Banks Engle sacrifice bunt.
- In the sixth & seventh innings, Pfeiffer tallied nine unanswered runs to go up 12-6.
- The Monarchs was able to make some noise in the ninth and scored three additional runs. To begin the inning, three of the first four batters had a base hit with Mauger's single bringing in one run. After an Engle walk to load the bases, Melvin came through with infield single. Next up was Austin Rinel, who drew a bases loaded walk to allow the third Methodist run to score in the inning. That would be the final Monarch run to come around before the third out was recorded.
