GREENSBORO, N.C. Hoping to get hot at the right time, the sixth-seeded Methodist softball team opened the USA South Tournament with a close loss to North Carolina Wesleyan on Thursday. Facing elimination in the ensuing contest, the Monarchs suffered a swift defeat against Greensboro College.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (Methodist vs. N.C. Wesleyan)
- Despite allowing no hits in the top of the first, the Monarchs conceded one run after allowing three walks and one batter to reach via error. Methodist capitalized with a run in the top of the second inning following an error by the Battling Bishops.
- North Carolina Wesleyan added three runs in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Minnie Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 4-2, but a 2-RBI double for the Battling Bishops in the bottom of the inning put Methodist down by four.
- A 2-RBI double by Rachel Blanchard in the fourth put the Monarchs back within two runs. Kiersten Margoupis forced the first three batters out in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, giving Methodist a chance to come back, but with runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, the Monarchs were unable to score.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (Methodist vs. Greensboro)
- The Pride had it their way, teeing off for eight hits and benefiting from four walks in the first three innings, which translated to 10 runs. A 2-run homer gave Greensboro a 10-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
- The Monarchs were held to just two runs – both of which were scored by Sydney Sizemore. Both runs were also considered unearned.
NUMBERS
- Batting cleanup, Alyssa Rivas went 3-for-4 in the loss to North Carolina Wesleyan. The Monarchs actually out-hit the Battling Bishops (7-6).
- Hannah Lovick was the only Monarch to get a hit in both games, batting 2-for-4 versus N.C. Wesleyan and 1-for-2 against Greensboro.
