Monarchs Conclude Historic Season with Championship Loss to Meredith

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  With dreams of earning a USA South Tournament title for the first time in program history, the Methodist women's lacrosse team took to the field at Monarch Stadium to battle the reigning champs from Meredith College on Saturday. The Avenging Angels – seeking redemption for their loss in Fayetteville during the regular season – went ahead 3-0 and never relinquished the lead, claiming their tenth consecutive championship and ending a historic run for the top-seeded Monarchs.

Four players for Methodist were named to the All-Tournament team: Kennedy Martin, Brooke Murrell, Mikayla Ramos and Layla Wiesenfeld.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Meredith def. Methodist, 20-8
Records: Methodist 15-3, Meredith 14-6
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three goals in five minutes gave Meredith the early edge. A score by Kennedy Martin on a man-up opportunity reduced Methodist's deficit to two, but Ava Spradley quickly answered for the Avenging Angels, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Methodist remained poised and scored first in the second quarter – Martin being the one to put the ball in the net and doing so on yet another man-up chance. Meredith responded with a pair of scores before the Monarchs ripped off a three-goal run to sneak within one score, now down just 6-5 midway through the second period.
  • Spradley stopped the streak with a score for Meredith, but Methodist pushed back within one with a score from Layla Wiesenfeld. Over the final four minutes of the half, the Avenging Angels punched in three more goals, including a score by Spradley with just three seconds left on the clock, to make the difference 10-6.
  • With their backs against the wall, the Monarchs conceded five goals in the third quarter with just one answer by Wiesenfeld. To make matters worse, Martin was assessed her second yellow card with 5:19 left in the third quarter, disqualifying her for the remainder of the match.
  • The ball continued to bounce in Meredith's favor, literally bouncing into the net for an Avenging Angels goal following an unsuccessful pass between two Monarchs less than a minute into the fourth quarter. The goals continued to pour on, with Tia Marlinghaus producing the only answer for Methodist. The Monarchs were held scoreless over the final 10 minutes as Meredith ascended to a 20-8 victory.
FAST FACTS
  • Setting a USA South tournament record, Tia Marlinghaus recorded 25 draw controls over the course of three games (including seven on Saturday), topping the previous best of 23. The Monarchs also set the tournament draw control record as a team with 58, breaking last year's record of 54.
  • Kayla Nee, with her one assist, reached 200 assists in her career, becoming the 14th player in NCAA Division III history to accomplish the feat and the only player ever to do so for the Monarchs or the USA South.
  • Ashley Fuentes finishes the season with a goals-against average of 8.00, setting a new single-season record among Methodist goalies having played at least 400 minutes in a season.
UP NEXT
The Monarchs end the season with a lot to be proud of, including a program-best record of 15-3.
