FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist University women's soccer hosted Greensboro College on Tuesday night in USA South Athletic Conference action, the first for both teams in 2024. Following a four-game skid, the Monarchs got back into the win column after they defeated the Pride 2-0 inside Duggins Soccer Stadium.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Greensboro, 2–0
Records: Methodist 2-4 (1-0 USA South), Greensboro 3-7 (0-1)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- There wasn't a ton of offense during the first 37 minutes of the match as just three shots were registered, two by Methodist and one by Greensboro, respectively.
- With the Monarchs looking for a spark to kickstart the offense, senior Quierra Hawkins was substituted into the match. A little over a minute later, Hawkins did just that as she took control of the ball and ran with it into the box of the Pride. She then dished the ball off to freshman Cadence Brown, who was at the top of the box. A quick touch was followed by a 20-yard shot that went into the bottom right corner of the net for a Methodist goal, in the 38th minute.
- With the score still 1-0, senior Corrine Shovlain of the Monarchs nearly recorded her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute. A failed clear attempt by a Greensboro defender allowed the ball to bounce to the feet of Shovlain, and after she got around the center back that was guarding her, she took a shot from point-blank range but right into the bread basket of the Pride's goalkeeper.
- Methodist would get its second goal just 34 seconds later, with sophomore Emily Hoyt finding the back of the net. A deflected pass reached Shovlain, who was about five yards away from the right post of the goal, and as she drew four Greensboro defenders, she passed the ball off to Hoyt. In the open space, Hoyt fired a left-footed shot into the top left corner to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
NUMBERS
- Methodist controlled the pace of the game from start to finish. The team's five corner kicks showed they were in the attacking zone, and once in there, the Monarchs generated 12 shots with seven on target.
- Junior goalie Carolina Simpkins kept a clean sheet as she posted her second shutout of the season while making one save.
- For Brown, her goal was also the first of her collegiate career
- For the fourth consecutive time against the Pride, Methodist has scored two or more goals.
