Panthers Pounce on the Monarchs in Road Loss

LAGRANGE, Ga.  Methodist University football went on the road to the state of Georgia to face USA South opponent LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon. A couple of quick Panther attacks, pared with Monarchs turnovers, led to a big first quarter for LaGrange and eventually a 40-24 victory at Callaway Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: LaGrange def. Methodist, 40-24
Records: Methodist 1-3 (1-1 USA South), LaGrange 1-2 (1-0)
Location: Callaway Stadium; LaGrange, Georgia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Less than two and half minutes into the ballgame, the Panthers found themselves up 14-0 over Methodist. First, Panther quarterback Henry Brodnax completed a 62-yard pass to Jashar Anderson, on the second play from scrimmage, for the team's first score. Then after a Monarch turnover, LaGrange running back Goldman Butler VI finished off the Panthers' next drive with a four-yard run into the end zone.
  • Methodist responded right back and scored the next 10 points. A trio of LaGrange penalties spotted the ball at the Panthers' 28-yard line, but the Monarchs were unable to get past the 15-yard line and had to send out senior Samuel Andrae & the field goal unit. Andrae's 42-yard attempt was good for the first Methodist points.
  • During the ensuing LaGrange drive, safety Idris Webb of the Monarchs intercepted Brodnax and brought the ball back 40 yards to the 39-yard line of the Panthers. One play later, sophomore Brennan Brucato completed a pass to senior Mikhail Baldwin for a 39-yard touchdown to cut the Methodist deficit to four, 14-10.
  • LaGrange place kicker, Landon Eaker, added three more points after he successfully made a 35-yard field goal to put his team back up by seven. The Panthers' defense would than make it a 14-point difference, 24-10, following a sack fumble that was picked up and returned 20 yards for a defensive touchdown.
  • The Monarchs had a strong start to begin quarter two as freshman CJ Ferguson caught a 20-yard pass for a touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, a couple of big chuck play that includes a 16-yard run by sophomore Sajari Love and a 14-yard completion to junior Marquez Jones helped Methodist get to LaGrange's 20-yard line. Then one play into the new period, Brucato completed a swing pass to Ferguson for the score.
  • The Panthers eventually took a commanding 40-17 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. A 34-yard field goal by Eaker and a 12-yard touchdown run by Butler gave LaGrange a 33-17 lead at halftime, then an early third quarter fumble by Methodist was recovered by the Panthers. It wasn't long before Brodnax threw his second long touchdown pass, a 49-yarder, this time to Ashton Bryant.
  • Fellow freshman running back Kyan McCollum had the final touchdown of the game for the Monarchs, a 12-yard run.
MORE TO IT

Freshman Jaelen Pile led all receivers with seven catches for 64 yards, both season-highs. Rookie duo McCollum and Ferguson finished one-two in rushing for the Monarchs, as McCollum ran for 39 yards and a touchdown, on five carries, while Ferguson recorded 38 yards on 11 rush attempts.
