Methodist Falls to Seahawks in Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md.  Playing the second of two contests at the Salisbury University Classic, the Methodist women's soccer team took to the pitch on Sunday looking for redemption after a 4–1 loss the day prior. While holding St. Mary's College (Md.) to two goals, Methodist was unable to produce a score of its own, dropping Sunday's match 2–0.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: St. Mary's (Md.) def. Methodist, 2–0
Records: Methodist 1–2–0, St. Mary's (Md.) 4–0–1
Location: Sea Gull Stadium; Salisbury, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs suffered an early lapse on defense, conceding a goal less than three minutes into the match. Methodist tried to counter the score by St. Mary's less than a minute later, but Kelsey Burge's shot was saved by the Seahawks' goalkeeper.
  • The St. Mary's squad placed four more shots on goal in the first half — all of which were saved by Methodist's goalkeeper Kaylea Carter. Meanwhile, Allye Carter attempted Methodist's only other shot of the first half, which was not on the mark.
  • The second half unfolded in a similar rhythm, with the Seahawks logging a score 12 minutes into the period. The Monarchs attempted three shots that were off target before finally placing their fourth on goal, but Burge's attempt in the 86th minute was once again saved.

NUMBERS
  • Kaylea Carter saw her first action of the 2024 season, filling in for 2023 USA South Goalkeeper of the Year Carolina Simpkins, who played a full 90 minutes the day prior. Carter faced seven shots on goal, making five saves.
  • The Monarchs were stifled on offense, with three of their six shots being delivered by defenders (two by Brooke Hunter and one by Allye Carter).
