JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Meredith, 63–34
Records: Methodist 8–5 (4–1 USA South), Meredith 3–8 (1–4)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A steal by Melissa D'Oleo led to the first made basket for Methodist, scored by Arriana White. The Monarchs also registered the next six points of the game, with Jillian Peterson recording the last four. After Meredith recorded its lone basket of the first quarter, the duo of Aneesa Irizarry (4) and Kayleen Grullon (7) combined for the last 11 Methodist points of the period, including a buzzer-beating three by Grullon.
- The scoring in the second quarter was a lot more even, as both teams scored 11 points before halftime. Converting the first made jumper for the Monarchs was Tori Coleman, followed by Grullon, who added another two points to her total with a layup. Another five points pushed Methodist's advantage to 28-7 until the Avenging Angels scored four straight points to keep it under a 20-point difference. A layup by each team was how the first half concluded, with Tsion Steele making the bucket for the Monarchs.
- The third quarter started with Meredith outscoring Methodist 5-2, but then a quick steal and layup by D'Oleo sparked a 9-0 run for the Monarchs, giving them a 41-18 lead. During the last four minutes of the period, Methodist scored two more points than the Avenging Angels, 6-4, with Giavonna Dunlap, Alyssa Shazer, and Korin Gladden each contributing a basket for the Monarchs.
- In the fourth quarter, Jehari Jacobs scored three of the first five Methodist points, all from the free throw line, before the Monarchs utilized another 9-0 scoring run to make it 61-27. The game ended with Meredith going on a 7-2 scoring run, with the final two Methodist points being recorded by Steele on a mid-range jumper.
