Methodist Falls Twice Versus Messiah

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Hosting a Monday doubleheader against the Falcons of Messiah University, the Methodist softball team saw two chances of victory pass by, losing game one by three runs and falling short by just one run in the second game. Errors proved costly for the Monarchs, as the Falcons totaled five unearned runs on the day.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Messiah def. Methodist, 5–2; Messiah def. Methodist, 6–5
Records: Methodist 2–2; Messiah 2–0
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Fallon Feaser had a great game for the Falcons in the pitcher's circle and at the plate. She batted in the first run of the ballgame to give the visitor's a 1-0 lead. Methodist matched in the second inning when a Grace Hobbs double brought Reilly Howell home.
  • After a scoreless third, Messiah recorded two hits and used two errors by the Monarchs to score three runs in the top of the fourth, taking a 4–1 advantage. Methodist answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth when an Alyssa Rivas pop fly scored Hannah Lovick from third base.
  • The Falcons added one more run in the seventh and the Monarchs had no response. In total, Methodist left eight runners stranded on base throughout the game. Kiersten Margoupis pitched the entire seven innings, allowing only three earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Emma Neeley faced just four batters during a clean half inning to start the second game. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Howell batted in Rachel Blanchard (who had previously tripled), then scored on an error during the next at–bat.
  • Messiah put two runs on the board in the second and two more in the third, with partial help from the Monarchs, who recorded an error in each frame. Down 4–2, Methodist pieced together five hits in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs and retake the lead.
  • After a scoreless fourth, the Falcons managed to score the tying run in the top of the fifth. Two batters later, a double to right–center field brought the go–ahead run across the plate. The Monarchs swapped out Neeley and put Mia Wraight in the circle — in need of just one out to end the half inning. After walking the first two batters she faced to load the bases, Wraight forced a lineout to avoid catastrophe.
  • The Monarchs began the bottom of the fifth with this sequence: a hit–by–pitch, a single, and a walk. With bases loaded and no outs, Lovick launched a ball into right field that was caught, recording the first out. On the ensuing throw to home, Regan Duncan was thrown out at the plate for out number two. Then, during a throw down to second base, Haley Downes tried to score from third but was also tagged at the plate for out number three. With the wind taken out of their sails, the Monarchs were unable to reach base in their final six at–bats.
NUMBERS
  • The Monarchs incurred nine errors on the day — five in the first game and four in the second.
  • Blanchard was the lone Monarch on the day to record three hits, batting 1–for–4 in game one and 2–for–4 in game two. Her triple in game two marks the 10th triple of her career and already her second on the season.
