WESTMINSTER, Md. Methodist University men's tennis began the 2025 spring season strong on Friday afternoon, going on the road to sweep McDaniel College 7–0 in non-conference action.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. McDaniel 7–0
Records: Methodist 1-0, McDaniel 2-7
Location: Warfield Tennis Courts; Westminster, Maryland
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs' doubles teams of Matthew Hurley/Harry Crokam (No. 1) and Wills Belser/Ethan Carlyle (No. 2) easily defeated their opponents, not losing a game with a score of 6-0. Their victories gave Methodist a 1–0 lead heading into singles. Beginning this academic year, Division III changed its rules to a best-of-three format, which means that a team can earn only one point in doubles.
- No. 3 doubles paired Drew Guarnieri and Christian Tihanovich, and after a flight that required a tie-breaker set, Guarnieri and Tihanovich were victorious 7-6 (7-5).
- In singles, Hurley secured the first win (6-0, 6-0) for the Monarchs, a match pitting the No. 1s. The next three to finish were Crokam (No. 2), Carlyle (No. 4), and Tihanovich (No. 5), in that order. All three of them won their respective flights by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1.
- Even though Methodist had already claimed the match, as the team was up 5–0, Cameron Roth and Guarnieri excelled in their flights to claim the sweep for the Monarchs.
- After dropping just one game in his first set, 6-1, Roth, who competed in No. 6 singles, turned his game up another notch to get a 6-0 win in the second set. Guarnieri played in No. 5 singles, defeating his foe in two sets (6-3, 6-2).
