Monarchs Drop Road Game as Greensboro Pride Get in the Way

GREENSBORO, N.C.  With a spot in the USA South Tournament up for grabs, the Methodist men's basketball team took on the Greensboro College Pride on Saturday, with both sides needing a win to have a shot at the sixth and final seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Despite contending for the lead throughout the entire contest, the Monarchs ultimately fell by nine in the penultimate game of their season.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 70–61
Records: Methodist 7-17 (3–10 USA South), Greensboro 6–19 (5–9 USA South)
Location: Hanes Gymnasium; Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A slow start by both teams saw Zac Sledge score four consecutive Methodist baskets, tying the game at 10–10 with 14:14 left to go in the first half. As the Pride poured on threes in the first half, they grasped the lead and went ahead by as many as seven points.
  • With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, a layup by Ron Jones tied the score at 28–28. Greensboro's Isaiah Pruett took matters into his own hands during the final minute and a half, scoring five points to send his team to the locker room with a 33–28 advantage.
  • The Monarchs opened the second half with a 13–4 run, powered by 10 points from the hand of Jeremy Mull. Greensboro scored the next 10, reclaiming a six–point edge. Mull was quick to go back to work, scoring six points as Methodist tallied an 8–0 run and retook the lead (49–47 with 8:19 left to play).
  • The Pride tied the game at 53–53, then scored the next nine points to go up 62–53. With less than a minute and a half remaining, the difference proved to be insurmountable for the Monarchs.
MORE TO IT
  • Mull's team–leading 16 points are a season high and the second–most points he's ever scored in a game. He also contributed four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
  • Zac Sledge recorded his second double–double of the season, posting 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Methodist shot just 36.5% from the field and a mere 3–for–15 from beyond the arc.
