Monarchs Defeated in Extra Innings on Opening Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Under an overcast sky on Saturday afternoon, the Methodist baseball team stepped onto Armstrong–Shelley Field for the first time in 2025. Hosting the Maroons of Roanoke College, the Monarchs forced extra innings when they scored a tying run in the bottom of the ninth before ultimately falling in the eleventh.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Roanoke def. Methodist, 4–3 (11 innings)
Records: Methodist 0-1, Roanoke 1-0
Location: Armstrong–Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Making his first start since early in the 2024 campaign, Kyle Molivas kept the Maroons scoreless through the first five innings while giving up just two hits over that span. The Monarchs were hitless through three innings but officially got on the board in the fourth when Brandon Mauger delivered a double to left field. Two at–bats later, Caleb Rogers stepped up with bases loaded and drove in the first run of the ballgame. In the fifth inning, Caleb Greene scored to give Methodist a 2–0 advantage.
  • Parker Stallard made a statement in the top of the sixth with a homerun to dead center field. Soon after, Hayden Giordano crossed home to tie the game at 2–2. With two outs and a runner on second base, Andrew Baur relieved Molivas on the mound and struck the next batter out to end the inning.
  • Roanoke took advantage of a throwing error in the top of the seventh and scored once more, capturing the lead (3–2) for the first time. Baur pitched a clean seventh and eighth, allowing no hits and striking out a batter in both frames. He put two runners on in the ninth but worked his way out of the inning with no damage done.
  • Mauger started a rally for the Monarchs in the bottom of the ninth by leading off with his second double of the afternoon. Banks Hartman executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to put the tying run 90 feet away, and Rogers handled business with an RBI single up the middle, suddenly presenting Methodist with a better shot at a walk–off win. However, he was promptly thrown out attempting to steal second base.
  • Unable to bring another run across the plate, the Monarchs opted to place Andrew Bubon on the mound to start the 10th inning. The first batter he faced launched a ball into right–center field that was nearly caught by a diving Austin Rinzel but led to a triple. From there, Bubon locked in, striking out the next two batters and forcing a groundout for out number three.
  • The Monarchs were a quick three outs in the bottom of the 10th, forcing Bubon back out for another inning. After giving up a double and a walk to the first two batters he faced, he was relieved by Chase Carroll. Carroll forced two outs but conceded one hit that drove in the go–ahead run, which Methodist was unable to answer in the following frame.
COVERING ALL THE BASES
  • Mauger recorded his first multi–double game of his career, reaching second base in the fourth inning and the ninth inning. His first hit advanced Jackson Deal, who eventually scored. His second time on base, he was able to cross home safely.
  • Molivas and Baur both performed well on the hill, combining for five strikeouts across nine innings and limiting the Maroons to just one earned run.
