Game Recap: Softball | | Matthew Shealy

Monarchs Narrowly Beaten Twice by Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.  In two games that came down to the wire on Sunday, the Methodist softball team came up one run short in both instances, suffering defeat twice at the hands of the Guilford College Quakers.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Guilford def. Methodist, 9–8 (8 innings); Guilford def. Methodist, 2–1
Records: Methodist 4–8; Greensboro 5–5
Location: Haworth Field; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • With an RBI and a run scored in the top of the first, Rachel Blanchard put the Monarchs up 2–0. The Quakers answered with one run in the next frame, then scored five runs in the second inning.
  • Alyssa Rivas brought Hannah Lovick home in the third, making the score 6–3. Still down by three runs entering the seventh inning, Methodist turned four hits into three runs to tie the game (with RBIs by Lovick, Blanchard and Amanda Blackburn) but left the go–ahead run stranded at third base. With Kiersten Margoupis in the pitcher's circle, the Monarchs were able to keep Guilford scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, forcing an eighth inning.
  • Though Methodist was able to score two runs in the extra inning, the Quakers put up three to walk it off.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • After a scoring fest earlier in the afternoon, Emma Neeley and Shiloh Gray engaged in a pitchers' duel. Scoreless through three innings, the Quakers finally struck in the fourth, scoring the first run of the game.
  • After Guilford scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, Blanchard led off the sixth inning with a homerun to right field. The Monarchs would not score again though, falling 2–1.
NUMBERS
  • The Monarchs recorded a total of 20 hits on the day, 18 of which were singles. Blanchard's double in game one and homer in game two proved to be the only extra–base hits for Methodist.
  • Margoupis dealt seven strikeouts in game one, matching her career–high that she just recorded against Ferrum on Saturday. Unfortunately, she was unable to earn the win in either outing.
UP NEXT
Methodist next competes at the Grand Slam Triangle Softball Classic in Walnut Creek, where they'll first face Eastern Mennonite University and Shenandoah University of Saturday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
