Monarchs Sweep Mary Baldwin in Opening USA South Doubleheader

STAUNTON, Va.  Showing signs of a dynamic offense in the first conference matchup of the season, the Methodist softball team flourished away from home on Saturday while taking on USA South foe Mary Baldwin University. The Monarchs battled to a two–run victory in game one of the doubleheader before pitching a shutout in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • A Mary Baldwin home run in the fourth — followed by two runs in the fifth — tied the game at 3–3. The Monarchs wasted no time in finding the right time to rally. Rachel Lawson, Haley Downes, Kealey Wade and Amanda Blackburn recorded four consecutive singles to start the sixth inning, with Blackburn bringing home the first two.
  • Rachel Blanchard joined in on the action, contributing a one–out, RBI double. She was followed by Rivas, who singled to drive in another run. After Rivas was Grace Hobbs, who also logged an RBI, giving Methodist an 8–3 advantage.
  • The Fighting Squirrels managed to add three runs to their total in the bottom of the seventh. With the potential tying run on deck and only one out, Kiersten Margoupis was able to strike out the final two batters of the game. She finished with five strikeouts.

  • The Monarchs scored one run in the first inning on a Mary Baldwin miscue, then added two more to the total in the third with a deep shot by Blanchard — her fourth of the season.
  • Hannah Lovick and Blanchard each recorded a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning before Rivas added a final insurance run in the top of the seventh. Neeley and the Methodist defense held the Fighting Squirrels scoreless.
