MARS HILL, N.C. & BRISTOL, Tenn. The Methodist University men's tennis team competed against a pair of Division II schools on Sunday. In the morning, they faced Mars Hill University and King University in the afternoon. In both non-conference matches, the Monarchs fell by the same score of 5–2 at the Hart Tennis Complex and at the King Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
MATCH ONE (Mars Hill)
- The Monarchs were swept in doubles action, with Harry Crokam and Ethan Carlyle having the closest flight score, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot.
- At No. 4 singles, Ishamael Dowuoua won another point for the Lions after defeating Carlyle 6-2, 6-4, but then Methodist's Matthew Hurley cut the advantage in half, 2–1, once he triumphed 6-3, 6-1 against Paul-Antoine Pelzer on the first court.
- Victories at No. 3 & No. 6 singles secured the overall match for Mars Hill, as Diell Mehmedi won 6-0, 6-2 versus the Monarch's Anton McCloskey while Drew Guarnieri fell to Sirac Aslan of the Lions 6-4, 6-2. The final Mars Hill win came at the No. 2 position with Paulo Gutierrez handing Crokam a 7-5, 6-2 loss.
- The only other Methodist dub was on the fifth court as Christian Tihanovich became the victor in the tiebreaker round, beating Collin Maides 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8).
MATCH TWO (King)
- For the second time today, the Monarchs lost the doubles point but at least the top pair of Matthew Hurley and Decklan Rayner won their respective flight 6-3.
- A couple of swift victories by the Tornados in No. 5 (6-1, 6-0 against Christian Tihanovich) and No. 3 (6-0, 6-0 against Anton McCloskey) singles pushed their lead to 3–0. After winning in doubles, Hurley required a tiebreaker set to win again in singles, defeating King's Bar Meshel 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).
- At the No. 2 spot, Methodist's Harry Crokam lost to Rhys Halcrow 6-4, 6-3, clinching the overall match for the Tornados. Drew Guarnieri of the Monarchs played on the sixth court and faced off against King's Rohan Chalisgaonkar. In a tightly contested first set, Guarnieri narrowly lost 7-6 (7-3) before dropping the second set 6-3.
- The last singles flight to finish was the battle at No. 4, pitting Methodist's Ethan Carlyle against Caetano Luzzi of the Tornados. Carlyle triumphed in the opening set 6-4, but then Luzzi returned to claim set two 7-5. In the decisive tiebreaker set, Carlyle was victorious 10-8, giving the Monarchs their second point of the match.
UP NEXT
Methodist will face its second national-ranked team within a week, as the Monarchs travel to #37 North Carolina Wesleyan University on Tuesday, April 15. Also at stake is an undefeated USA South record and the top spot in the upcoming conference tournament. The opening serve of the match is scheduled for 2 PM.
