Methodist Defeats Johnson & Wales for a Second Time

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  On Monday, the Methodist men's tennis team played one final tune-up match before the conference tournament, traveling to Johnson & Wales University for the second time this season. Similar to their previous encounter, the Monarchs asserted their dominance, sweeping the Wildcats 7–0 at West Charlotte High School.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist took all three double flights by identical scores of 6-1. Matthew Hurley and Decklan Rayner were at the No. 1 spot, while the Monarch duo of Wills Belser and Harry Crokam played at the No. 2. The last Methodist pair, Drew Guarnieri and Cameron Roth, were slotted in the No. 3 position.
  • In singles competition, Christian Tihanovich wasted no time on the fourth court, sweeping his opponent, Dlyan Hight, 6-0, 6-0. Hurley was the next Monarch to wrap up his flight, No. 1, as he defeated Justin Wagner 6-1, 6-2.
  • Rayner, playing in his first singles match since March, took on Cayden Danzer at the No. 6 spot and won 6-0, 6-2. In No. 3 singles, Ethan Carlyle triumphed over Maxwell Frederick 6-2, 6-1.
  • With a pair of 6-1 set victories, Guarnieri came out on top against Sam Cicciarello in the No. 5 position. Crokam sealed the sweep for Methodist after beating Hugo Cossais 6-2, 6-3 on the second court.
UP NEXT
Methodist now turns its attention to the 2025 USA South Men's Tennis Tournament, and as the No. 2 seed, the Monarchs receive a bye into the semifinals on Friday, April 25. The Monarchs will await the winner of the Pfeiffer/William Peace match and play them at 10 AM on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan University.
