HOW IT HAPPENED – SATURDAY (at Salem)

  • Methodist got on the scoreboard first in Game One, as Hannah Lovick reached base on a walk before coming around to score on a two-run home run by Alyssa Rivas. The Monarchs increased their lead, 5–0, after scoring three more runs in the third inning. With bases loaded, Devan Wenger started the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly, followed by Reilly Howell getting a base hit down the left field line to plate two more Methodist runs. In the sixth inning, the Monarchs registered their final run after Kealey Wade and Rivas recorded a double to trade spots.
  • Game Two started much like the first game, with Methodist scoring the opening runs via the long ball, as Howell crushed her first collegiate homer –– a two-run shot –– in the second inning. After going scoreless in Game One, Salem got on the scoreboard for the first time in the third inning before scoring more runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 5–2 advantage. The Monarchs fought back, though, and scored four runs in the seventh to go up 6–5. Bailey Snow led off the inning with a walk before coming around to score on a Lovick double. After Rachel Blanchard got on base with a single, Rivas drove everyone home with her second home run of the day, a three-run shot. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a solo homer tied the game for the Spirits, forcing extra innings. Only one extra frame was required as Salem scored the game-winning run on an infield single in the eighth.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SUNDAY (at Brevard)

  • Some excellent defense by both teams kept Game One scoreless for the first three innings, as four double plays were registered, two by each side. Eventually, Methodist got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. A walk, followed by a stolen base, put Snow in scoring position, and then, she came around to score on an RBI double by Rivas. A few batters later, Dakota Putman, who was pinch running for Rivas, scored on a Brevard fielding error. The Tornados cut the deficit in half, 2–1, in the sixth inning, as Addie MacDougall scored on an RBI double by Addison Smith. That was the only run Brevard scored in the opening game as Methodist won 3–1, after scoring an insurance run in the seventh.
  • In the first inning of Game Two, the Monarchs claimed a 1–0 advantage. Following a hit by pitch, a sac bunt, and a stolen base to advance Lynsey Plunkett to third base, Amanda Blackburn drove her in on an RBI single to center field. Methodist's starting pitcher, Emma Neeley, ran into trouble in the second inning, as Brevard loaded the bases with one out. She minimized the damage as best as she could but not before the Tornados tied up the game. The Monarchs quickly controlled the lead once again in the third inning. Three of the first four Methodist batters reached safely to load up the bases when Rachel Lawson had a sac fly to put the Monarchs in front 2–1. The score remained the same until the sixth inning, with Brevard scoring two runs to go up 3–2. In the seventh, Methodist had its leadoff batter get on base with a base hit but was unable to get the runner into scoring position.

NUMBERS

  • Methodist pitcher Kiersten Margoupis was masterful this weekend. She went 2-0, surrendered just one run, and struck out 11 batters. Against Salem, she pitched a complete-game shutout while allowing five hits and had a game-high nine strikeouts. Versus Brevard, she once again went the distance, gave up one run on four hits, and struck out two batters.
  • Offensively, Rivas and Howell led Monarch hitters. In three games this weekend, Rivas went 6-for-11 with seven RBI, while Howell played in every game, produced six hits in 12 at-bats, and registered four RBI.
  • In three of the four games this weekend, Methodist recorded eight or more hits as a team.

UP NEXT
With a 7-11 conference record, Methodist qualifies for the upcoming 2025 USA South Softball Tournament, which is set to begin Thursday, May 1. The Monarchs will have to wait until all other league games are completed to figure out their seeding and who they will play next.
