Pitchers Dominate as Methodist Falls to Randolph–Macon in 10 Innings

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  It was a pitching performance for the ages on Tuesday evening as the Methodist baseball team took on Randolph–Macon College in a non–conference clash for each squad's final game of the regular season. With no runs scored by either side through nine innings, the Yellow Jackets finally broke the stalemate in the 10th inning to come out on top.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Randolph–Macon def. Methodist, 3–0
Records: Methodist 27-13, Randolph–Macon 25-12
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The scheduled bullpen game for the Monarchs began with Anthony Sarbanes on the mound. The senior right–hander faced just four batters, earning one strikeout as he handled the visitors in the top of the first. Michael Heis was next in line, tossing two clean innings of three batters each.
  • Andrew Baur, Brandon Humphreys and Brice Herring all contributed an inning each without giving up a single hit. Josh Plisko faced just four batters as he took care of business in the seventh, then Jackson Kuhn only needed three batters for three outs in the eighth, striking out two of the batters he faced.
  • Offensively, the Monarchs saw one hit in the third and one in the fifth. Both times, Methodist was able to get a runner all the way to third base during the inning but was unable to bring the runner home. In the sixth inning, three Methodist batters walked to load the bases, but once again the team came away without a run.
  • Blake Freeman launched a ball to right–center field for a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth, but the next three batters all were unable to provide any aid.
  • Chase Carroll pitched the ninth, forcing a flyout and a groundout before sealing the frame with a strikeout. However, the Monarchs generated no offense in the bottom of the inning, taking the game to an extra inning.
  • Paul Olive took the mound for the 10th, forcing the first batter he faced to ground out before strikeout out the next batter in line. After back–to–back singles, the Yellow Jackets drew back–to–back walks, pushing the first run of the game across the plate. Another shot to the outfield scored two more runs, which proved to be a mark the Monarchs couldn't match.
STAT FACTS
  • The Monarchs started the regular season and ended the regular season with an extra–innings affair. In six total extra–innings contests this season, the Monarchs are 3–3. This was both the fewest runs scored and fewest runs allowed by Methodist this season in a game that lasted more than nine innings.
  • With Freeman's double, the Monarchs finished the regular season with at least one extra–base hit in 37 out of 40 games.
