ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. Facing elimination in the USA South Tournament, the Methodist softball team saw its season come to a close on Friday with a one–run loss to Southern Virginia University. The Monarchs scored a run in three different innings but ultimately fell 4–3 to the Knights.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 4–3
Records: Methodist 14-27; Southern Virginia 15–23
Location: Edge Field; Rocky Mount, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With bases loaded in the top of the first, Rachel Lawson took a swing that sent the ball back to the pitcher, allowing her to reach base and bringing Hannah Lovick safely home from third.
- Kiersten Margoupis gave up just two hits over the course of the first three innings, holding the Knights to no runs. It was in the bottom of the fourth inning that the Southern Virginia offense came to life, starting with a leadoff double to left–center field. After a five–hit frame, the Knights had come away with four runs.
- Methodist got one run back in the top of the fifth when a leadoff single by Lovick, a sacrifice bunt by Bailey Snow and a hit to the outfield by Alyssa Rivas brought a run across the plate. Things worked similarly in the sixth, with Lawson recording the leadoff single, Haley Downes laying down the sacrifice bunt and Amanda Blackburn tallying the RBI to cut the difference down to one run.
- The Monarchs held the Knights scoreless in the bottom of the sixth with a double play to end the inning but were unable to add another run to their total in the seventh.
NUMBERS
- Rivas, the all–conference second team member, was one of two Monarchs that batted 2–for–3 on Friday. Lawson was the other to do so, and the duo combined for four of Methodist's six hits on the day.
- The Monarchs finish the season with a league–leading 59 sacrifice bunts, with the next closest team (Mary Baldwin) having recorded 30. However, Methodist's 147 runs scored rank eighth out of 10 teams in the USA South.
