Late Equalizer Lifts Monarchs to Draw with Mary Washington

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  With ten minutes left to play in Saturday's match against the University of Mary Washington, a loss looked inevitable for the Methodist women's soccer team, which had struggled to get much going on offense all day. A spark in the 83rd minute led to a unique equalizer for the Monarchs, lifting them to their fourth draw of the season.

The tie snaps an eight-game losing streak for the Monarchs against the Eagles spanning back to 1997. It's also a greatly improved result compared to last season's match between the two teams, when Methodist was defeated 7-0 in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist tied Mary Washington, 1-1
Records: Methodist 1-0-4, Mary Washington 5-1-1
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mary Washington dominated possession in the first half, putting up 10 shots compared to Methodist's none. However, the Eagles found difficulty with their aim and were unable to put any shots on target. Their closest chance came early in the period when a shot got past a diving Carolina Simpkins but bounced off the right post.
  • The Eagles continued to control the tempo and possess the ball more than the Monarchs in the second half. In the 52nd minute of play, a corner kick off the foot of Katie Britton connected with the head of Madison Bauserman, who directed the ball into the top right corner of the goal for a score.
  • The Monarchs were held without a shot for more than 80 minutes of action. With the ball bouncing around in Methodist's attacking zone in the 83rd minute, Haley Cousins lightly passed the ball ahead into the box. A charging Ally Quiroz nearly collided with the Mary Washington goalkeeper who came off her line to try and prevent a shot, but Quiroz connected with the ball to send it into the net to tie the match. It was a perfectly played ball by Cousins, who was playing in her first game of the season and had just checked in less than 10 minutes prior.
NUMBERS
  • Simpkins made six saves in the second half, including four after the Mary Washington goal.
  • The Eagles attempted 23 total shots on the afternoon while Methodist finished with just two. The Monarchs were also held with a single corner kick.
  • The fourth tie of the season marks Methodist's most draws in a single season in program history.
