FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. After jumping out to a 20–0 lead at halftime, Methodist football hung on in the second half against the visiting Apprentice School to claim its first win of the season, 20–19, on Saturday afternoon, inside Monarch Stadium.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Apprentice, 20-19
Records: Methodist 1-2, Apprentice 1-3
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Apprentice opened the game with the ball, but the Monarch defense immediately made its presence felt. On the fifth play of the drive, senior Christian Ellington stripped the ball away from the Builders' quarterback and fell on the fumble, giving Methodist possession near midfield.
- The offense took advantage quickly. Although two touchdowns were wiped away by penalties, sophomore quarterback Ty Little eventually capped the possession with a four-yard strike to sophomore Tyrone Atkinson Jr., giving Methodist a 7–0 lead.
- Just four plays later, junior safety Jaron Foreman intercepted a deep Apprentice pass to give the Monarchs the ball back. Methodist responded with its longest march of the day, an 83-yard drive that ate up more than eight minutes of clock. The possession was capped off with Little punching it in himself on a one-yard Monarch tush push. The extra point missed wide, keeping the score at 13–0.
- With the defense continuing to dominate, the Monarchs forced another turnover late in the half. Eventually, Methodist extended its lead to 20–0 with another QB sneak by Little before heading into the break.
- Methodist nearly added to its cushion to start the third quarter, driving 75 yards down to Apprentice's six-yard line. The Builders, however, blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt to keep the Monarchs off the board.
- Two plays later, Apprentice struck big as Kendall Hunt connected with Isaiah Townsend for a 72-yard touchdown. The PAT missed, and the score stood at 20–6.
- After another Methodist defensive stand that included a blocked field goal attempt, the Builders inched closer in the fourth quarter. Hunt found T.K. Petty on a 29-yard touchdown strike, trimming the deficit to 20–13 after the extra point.
- Apprentice kept the pressure on late, capping another long possession with Hunt's three-yard pass to Petty to make it 20–19 with just 17 seconds remaining. Opting to go for the win, the Builders faked the PAT and attempted a two-point conversion, but the Monarch defense was ready and stopped the play.
- Apprentice tried one last gamble with an onside kick, but Methodist covered it cleanly and ran out the clock to preserve the one-point win.
