Slow Start Leads Monarchs to Loss Versus Greensboro

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  A slow offensive start against Greensboro College had the Methodist men's basketball team playing from behind during Friday evening's contest, resulting in a 12-point loss for the Monarchs. The loss marks the team's first defeat at home since early December.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 91–79
Records: Methodist 8–9 (4–3 USA South), Greensboro 7–10 (3–3 USA South)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
Greensboro scored the first eight points of the game, but with more than 13 minutes left in the half, the Monarchs had cut into the lead, making the score 13–8 following a pair of KJ Brooks free throws. Another eight-point run put the Pride up by 13, then with nine minutes to go, Greensboro began a 12–0 run that suddenly had the Monarchs trailing 37–16 with six minutes to go in the half. The margin grew to as many as 27 points before a Deuce Rice layup brought Methodist's deficit to 24 at halftime.

Methodist played a much more solid second half, outscoring the Pride 50–38, but a comeback never materialized, with 10 points being the closest the Monarchs would get to their opponent. Dontavious Pettaway impressed across the final 20 minutes, scoring 19 of his 21 points, which included all seven of his field goals.

MORE TO IT
Pettaway led the squad in scoring, but Rice saw a season-high 27 minutes of action, which led to a career-high 16 points as he shot 6-of-10 from the field and 2-for-2 at the stripe.

The Monarchs were nearly flawless at the free-throw line, shooting 22-for-24. Pettaway was a perfect 7-for-7, making him 15-for-15 in his last two games and 29-for-35 so far in the month of January.

While defense has been effective for Methodist in most games, the Pride's 91 points matches the most the Monarchs have allowed in a game this season.

UP NEXT
The Monarchs are on the road for their next game, taking on William Peace University in Raleigh on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
