In his 11 seasons with the Monarch cross country teams, Helms has seen 49 of his student-athletes garner all-conference accolades, including the first two ever women cross country conference champions at Methodist, while the men's team has finished within the top three in eight of the last 11 USA South Conference championship meets.

Before joining Methodist, Helms led the cross country programs at Pine Forest High School (Fayetteville, N.C.) for two years.

As a college student-athlete, he competed on three Monarch cross country teams that qualified for NCAA Southeast Regionals and earned All-Mason-Dixon Conference honors for the distance medley relay in track and field.

Helms graduated from Methodist in May 2006 with a degree in elementary education. He later earned his master's degree in physical education-sports administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in December of 2013. He also currently holds a USATF Level II certification.Â
