Alumnus Bryan Madej was named head coach of the Methodist women's soccer team prior to the 2010 season. Now in his 16th season, he has become the winningest coach in program history, earning his 145th coaching victory on Sept. 29, 2024. Entering the 2026 season, he had compiled a coaching record of 158-105-20 and a 87-33-11 record in USA South Conference action. Madej has achieved 12 winning seasons, three USA South Conference Tournament Championships, and three berths in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. He has coached 65 all-conference selections, including 21 first-team nominees.
For the second time in three seasons, Methodist earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament after the 2024 squad claimed the program’s fourth USA South Tournament title—and the third under Madej. The Monarchs finished 11–8 overall and went 7–2 in league play. Seeded second in the conference tournament, Methodist hosted both the first and semifinal rounds, and with the top seed falling in the semifinals, the Monarchs also hosted the championship match. They capitalized on the opportunity, defeating No. 4 seed Southern Virginia University, 2–0, on their home pitch.
2022 marked the second time the Monarchs reached the NCAA Tournament under Madej's guidance. His team achieved a 13-2-1 regular-season record (including a 9-0 mark in conference play to win the USA South regular-season title), then completed "unfinished business" by winning all three of their matches in the USA South Tournament: a 5-2 Quarterfinal victory over Salem, a 2-1 Semifinal win in 2OT against Greensboro, and a 3-1 Championship victory over Southern Virginia in front of the home crowd at Duggins Soccer Stadium. Methodist fell in its opening round NCAA Tournament matchup versus #23 Rowan, finishing the historic season with a 16-3-1 record. The Monarch offense was paced by Fayetteville native Corrine Shovlain, who scored 13 goals on the season and was named USA South Player of the Year.
In the fall of 2021, the Monarchs returned to a normal season, completing an overall record of 13-2. The Monarchs were named the regular season conference champions after going undefeated in conference play with a 9-0 record, which was Madej’s first time finishing undefeated versus USA South opponents in the regular season. Madej also secured his fourth consecutive winning season, making it his ninth winning season overall. The Monarchs went on to play in the USA South tournament, defeating Huntingdon 2-0 in the Quarterfinals before falling in the Semifinals to Covenant, 1-3. For the second consecutive year, the Monarchs named six players to the all-conference team, led by junior forward Laura Harris with 15 points and five goals for the season, including one game-winner.
In the 2021 spring season, the Monarchs finished 5-1-1 overall with a 5-0-1 record in conference play after an altered season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Coach Madej clinched his eighth winning season and earned his 100th career win during the last game of the regular season. After having a five-game win streak to end the regular season, the Monarchs lost 0-2 in the East Division Semifinals to Pfeiffer. Six monarchs landed all-conference honors, including senior midfielder Aiden Sherry, who led the team with 15 points and seven goals for the season.
In the 2019 season, a 4-0-1 stretch to start October helped secure Madej his seventh winning season and sixth in seven years. Overall, the Monarchs finished 8-7-1 with a 4-3-1 record in conference action. The Monarchs advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Maryville (Tenn.). Madej coached three Monarchs to all-conference honors, led by freshman forward Laura Harris. Harris' 15 points and six goals, including three game-winners were a team-high.
In 2018, the Monarchs ended the season with a 3-1-1 stretch to ensure Madej's sixth winning season with an 8-7-1 overall record and a 3-3-1 mark in league play. After defeating N.C. Wesleyan in the first round of the conference tournament, the Monarchs lost to Piedmont, the eventual conference champions. Three Monarchs earned all-conference honors, including Capri Clark, who earned her second consecutive first team all-conference selection after leading the team with six goals scored in only nine games played.
In 2017, MU earned the bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade after defeating Meredith, 1-0, in the USA South Conference Championship game. It was the second conference tournament title in program history. Four players were named all-conference, including Capri Clark who earned first team laurels.
The Monarchs posted a 9-6-2 overall record and an 8-2-2 mark in USA South play to earn a No. 2 seed out of the East in 2016. A total of four players earned USA South all-conference laurels, including first team selections Taylor Cavazos and Kortney Maggard.
In 2015, Madej led the Monarchs to a 13-7 record behind a 9-3 mark in conference play. The Monarchs advanced to the finals of the league tournament before falling to Piedmont, 1-0, in the final seconds of the second overtime period.
The Monarchs closed the 2014 season with a 12-6-2 overall record and a 9-1-2 record in USA South play. The team advanced all the way to the USA South finals, where the Monarchs fell, 2-1 in OT, to Maryville. Four players earned all-conference recognition at the end of the season, including first team selections Eryka Underwood and Taylor Cavazos.
In 2013, the Monarchs finished 11-7-2 (8-3-1 USA South) and lost in overtime to visiting Meredith, 1-0, in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The defeat ended the team’s seven-match unbeaten streak.
Also in 2013, for the fourth time in as many seasons, Methodist earned one of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Awards. At the time of the selection process, the Monarchs had a 3.09 cumulative team grade point average during the fall 2013 semester. To be eligible for this honor, a team must collectively post a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Prior to his appointment to the women’s coaching staff, Madej served as an assistant for the Methodist men’s soccer team from 2005-2009.
During his playing career at Methodist from 1999-2002, Madej was a three-time All-Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, including a first-team pick in 2001 and two-time second-team pick. He scored 15 goals during the 2000 season, which earned him a NSCAA All-South second team nod.
In the program’s record books, he ranks seventh in career goals (38) and ninth in career points (84).
Madej graduated from Methodist in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in justice studies. He holds an Advanced National Diploma from the NCSAA as well as a Premier Diploma, which he earned in 2013.
Aside from his contributions to Methodist’s soccer program, Madej has been a positive presence in the local communities of Fayetteville and Hope Mills. Currently, Madej is the Director of Coaching for Liberty Soccer Academy-Fayetteville, overseeing youth teams from U10 to U18, including both girls' and boys' teams. Also, in the summer of 2024, Madej was the coach of the USLW franchise Fayetteville Fury, which began its first year in the league of USLW.
In 2008, he led the ’90 FSC Force Premier to the NCYSA President’s Cup State title. That team would later win the Region III President’s Cup Championship in Columbus, Ga., before losing in the National Director’s Cup title game in Kirkwood, Del.
Madej is the proud father of his two boys, Joshua and Christopher. Both excel in travel sports in soccer and baseball and have made Methodist their “second home” since they were born, and have found themselves on the soccer field and many other places around campus.
