FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team recognized senior
Sara Yeatman in her final regular season match at the Riddle Center. The only senior on the team, Tuesday was billed as "Sara Night."
The Monarchs took an early 2-0 lead and finished with the 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20) win over Meredith College. Methodist (14-11, 6-7) started out strong in the first set with an opening ace from freshman
Kelsey Yates. Methodist led 12-3 after an ace from Yeatman. The Avenging Angels (8-19, 5-8) moved within four at 19-15, but Methodist finished out with a kill from Yeatman for the 25-20 win.
Methodist scored first in the second set, but Meredith did not let the Monarchs pull away as the score was tied on nine different occasions. The Angels led at 16-17, but Methodist scored the next four points to lead 20-17. The Monarchs were ahead 23-21 when Meredith scored to move within one again, but Yeatman picked up a kill and freshman
Samantha Arrington finished off the set with a service ace to win 25-22.
The Monarchs started out with the lead in the third set, but Meredith came from behind to lead 17-22. Yeatman stopped the run with a kill and freshman
Elizabeth Rice served two points for the Monarchs to move within two points. The Angels were at set point at 20-24, but Methodist took advantage of a service error and kills from junior
Allison Averitt and freshman
Jalesty Washington to make it 23-24. Meredith finished it off with a kill for the 23-25 win.
It was Meredith who started the fourth set on a run, but Methodist came back and tied it at four. Washington had consecutive kills to give Methodist a 6-4 lead. The Monarchs continued their strong hitting to take the 22-16 lead on another kill by Averitt. Meredith scored the next three points, but Washington served up match point and finished it off with the kill for the 25-20 win.
Washington led the Monarchs with 24 kills while Yeatman added 16. Averitt was also in double figures with 13 kills. Yates dished out 52 assists and junior
Jordan Grady led the team with 26 digs. Yeatman had 12 digs, freshman
Rachel Evans had 11 and Yates added ten. Washington had two solo blocks for Methodist.
The Monarchs will play at Salem Friday at 6 pm.
