EMORY, Va. - The Monarchs took a 7-6 halftime lead, but fell 28-7 to Emory & Henry on Saturday. The Monarchs fall to 1-3 while Emory & Henry is 2-2.
The first quarter passed scoreless as the Monarchs could not advance into Emory & Henry territory. The Wasps started the second quarter on the Methodist eight-yard line, but the Monarchs' defense held them off forcing the 24-yard field goal.
Methodist's
Erik Teague was intercepted on the ensuing drive and Emory & Henry came back down the field for a 45-yard field goal. Later in the quarter, the Wasps had a chance for a 46-yard field goal but came up short giving Methodist the ball on their own 29-yard line. Teague found
Jared Boyles for a 17-yard reception at the Methodist 46-yard line. Teague was sacked on the next play but came back to connect with
Brian Hopkins for 17-yards reaching the Wasps' 41-yard line. Methodist called a timeout setting up the 41-yard touchdown pass from Teague to
Chris Peoples.
Mario Miralles hit the extra point for the 7-6 lead with 35 seconds to go in the half.
Late in the third quarter, Methodist had to punt giving Emory & Henry the ball on their own 23-yard line. The Wasps put together a 77-yard drive to score the touchdown and successfully completed a two-point conversion to take the 14-7 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Emory & Henry had another drive backed by 56-yards rushing from Caleb Jennings. The Wasps scored another touchdown to lead 21-7. They recovered an on-side kick, but Methodist blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt. The Monarchs couldn't get the first down and Emory & Henry came back to score on an 8-yard pass for their third touchdown and the 28-7 lead. Methodist was stopped by Emory & Henry on their next two drives to give the Wasps the victory.
Teague was 21-for-37 for 235 yards passing.
Corey McGuire ran for 35 yards.
Antonio Bartee led the defense with 11 tackles while
Mike McMillan had an interception for the Monarchs.
