Volleyball Splits with Christopher Newport and Ferrum

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Monarchs dropped a three set match to Christopher Newport (5-25, 6-25, 16-25) but came back to win 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 16-25, 17-15) over Ferrum.  The Monarchs move to 11-10 overall and 5-6 in the USA South.

In the first match, the 20th ranked Captains made quick work in the first two sets to win 25-5, and 25-6.  The Monarchs made a run in the third set closing the gap to 18-14 on a kill by freshman Jalesty Washington but Christopher Newport finished the match with the 25-16 win.

Washington had six kills while freshman Kelsey Yates had 15 digs.  Freshman Melissa Mott had 10 assists.

The Monarchs came back and won the first set 25-18 against Ferrum.  The Panthers took an early lead in the second set, but Methodist went on a run to tie the set at 19-19 on a kill from junior Jordan Grady.  The score was tied again at 20, 23 and 24, but Ferrum finished the set with consecutive points to win 26-24.  The Monarchs rebounded in the third set to win 25-19 but dropped the fourth set 16-25 sending the match to five.  In the fifth set, Ferrum led 10-7, but Methodist tied the set at 11.  The Monarchs had a 14-13 lead, but the Panthers tied it at 14 and took the 15-14 lead.  Methodist came back to tie it at 15 and took advantage of Panthers' errors to win 17-15.

Washington led the team with 18 kills while senior Sara Yeatman had 17.  Mott had 24 assists and junior Kelsey Carter had 18 assists.  Yates paced the team with 26 digs while Grady had 23 and Yeatman added 20.
