FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Maryville jumped on the Monarchs early and cruised to a 38-0 victory on Saturday. Methodist reached the red zone twice, but could not convert the opportunities into points as the Monarchs went scoreless.
Methodist received the ball to start the game and picked up 34-yards but were stalled at the Maryville 33-yard line bringing freshman
Shawn Dodd to punt. Maryville drove down the field and scored on a dish from quarterback Derek Hunt to Rommel Hightower who ran it in for the touchdown. Brad Daniell's extra point gave Maryville the 7-0 lead. Methodist could not pick up the first down on their only other possession of the quarter. The first quarter ended with Maryville on the Methodist nine yard line and the 7-0 advantage.
The Monarchs' defense got a stop by
Michael Doyne and the Scots converted a 26-yard field goal for the 10-0 lead. Methodist could not pick up a first down and punted back to Maryville who scored another touchdown. The Monarchs started with the ball on their own 40-yard line after the Scots' kickoff went out of bounds. Methodist quarterback
Erik Teague had 37-yards passing on the drive, but on fourth down and just a yard to go,
Corey McGuire was stopped with a yard lost giving the ball back to Maryville on downs. The Scots scored their third touchdown for the 24-0 lead. A Methodist interception gave the ball back to Maryville and they scored once more before halftime to lead 31-0.
Mario Miralles attempted a 48-yard field goal just before time expired, but Yohance Butler blocked the kick.
The third quarter started off well for Methodist as freshman
Jody Balaam intercepted Hunt's pass and had a 40-yard return to the Maryville 12-yard line. A false start pushed the Monarchs back to the 17-yard line, but Teague was then intercepted on the ensuing play. Methodist made it back to the Maryville 2-yard line but could not find the endzone. Neither team could score for the remainder of the quarter.
Maryville opened up the fourth quarter, but the Monarchs' defense got the stop and sophomore
Alan Preston came into the game at quarterback for Methodist. Preston led the Monarchs down the field to the Maryville 36-yard line, but on fourth and seven, Methodist opted to punt. Maryville quarterback Tim Connor found Wesley Idlette wide open for an 85-yard touchdown pass and the 38-0 advantage. Methodist could not cut into the lead as Maryville finished with the win.
Teague and Preston combined for 182 yards passing for the Monarchs. McGuire led the Monarchs' running game with 20 yards. Freshman
Jason Talbert had six catches for 33 yards while
Chris Peoples had four catches for 54 yards. Hunt and Connor threw for 210 yards while Hightower had 85 yards rushing.
Troy Glover led the Methodist defense with nine tackles while Balaam,
Chris Oden, and
Devoe Mewborn had seven a piece.
Chris Smith had an interception in the third quarter.
The Monarchs will host Greensboro Saturday, Nov. 8 in their final home game of the season.
