NC Wesleyan Comes From Behind to Defeat Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team took a 2-0 lead over N.C. Wesleyan Tuesday night, but the Battling Bishops came back to win 2-3 (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 8-15).  Methodist moves to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the USA South.  N.C. Wesleyan is 13-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

Methodist took advantage of N.C. Wesleyan errors in the first set and took a 16-11 lead.  The Monarchs finished off the set with a kill from Sara Yeatman to win 25-20.  In the second set, N.C. Wesleyan hung with Methodist but the Monarchs took the 24-21 lead forcing the Bishops to call a timeout.  N.C. Wesleyan got a kill and a Methodist error to move to 24-23, but Laura Gilbert had the final kill to win 25-23.

The score was 9-10 in the third set in favor of the Bishops when they went on a 11-3 run.  Methodist tried to make a late comeback, but N.C. Wesleyan prevailed 18-25.  The Monarchs took an early 17-12 lead in the fourth set and looked to finish it off, but N.C. Wesleyan came back once again and won 22-25 forcing the set to five matches.  Allison Averitt led off the fifth set with a kill for Methodist, but the score was tied at two when the Bishops scored the next three consecutive points.  Yeatman scored a kill to move the Monarchs to within three at 9-6, but N.C. Wesleyan finished the match off with the 8-15 win.

Averitt led the Monarchs with 19 kills while Yeatman had 17 and Jalesty Washington added 10.  Melissa Mott had 33 assists and Kelsey Carter dished out 17.  Libero Kelsey Yates had 28 digs while Jordan Grady and Yeatman had 14 a piece.

The Monarchs will travel to Christopher Newport this weekend for matches against the Captains and Ferrum.
