SALEM, Va. - Eastern Mennonite snuck in a late goal with less than three minutes to play in the game to take the 2-1 win over Methodist Sunday evening. The Monarchs fall to 1-3 while Eastern Mennonite moves to 2-3 this season.
After a scoreless first half, the Royals got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute. Methodist countered six minutes later with a penalty kick from freshman Danielle Minichello (Eden, N.C., John M. Morehead).
Eastern Mennonite had a chance to take the lead in the 75th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Sara Altman (Hamlet, N.C., Richmond Senior) made the save to keep the game tied at one. The Monarchs had an opportunity of their own when freshman Jillian Reed (New Bern, N.C., New Bern) hit the post, but it was the Royals who scored the game-winning goal.
Sophomore Kasey Nichols (Richmond, Va., Godwin) started in goal for the Monarchs making three saves in the first 42 minutes before Altman took over and made three stops.
The Royals' goalkeeper Abi Diffenbach had four saves.
After the second game of the day Roanoke announced the ODAC/USA South Challenge All-Tournament team. Minichello and sophomore Whitney Roberson (Kitty Hawk, N.C., First Flight) were selected to represent Methodist.
