WINCHESTER, VA. - Methodist dropped a five set match to Shenandoah 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 12-15) but came back with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-20) win over Averett on Saturday in USA South action.
The first against Shenandoah was tied on 11 different occasions with both teams trading points early. The Hornets took a 16-12 lead before a block from freshmen
Hayley Williams and
Stephanie Wood helped the Monarchs tie the set at 17. Shenandoah regained the lead and went on to score the last two points of the set to win 22-25.
Methodist came from behind in the second set to tie it up at 23 on a kill from senior
Taylor Cates. The Monarchs capitalized on a Shenandoah error to go ahead 24-23 before Cates finished with a kill for the 25-23 win. Methodist led through most of the third set to win 25-22 before dropping the fourth set 21-25, pushing the match to five.
Shenandoah jumped out to a 1-4 lead in the fifth, but the Monarchs went on a 4-2 run to move within one. The Hornets went back up 8-12 and finished with the 12-15 win to clinch the match victory.
Wood led the Monarchs with 17 kills while sophomore
Jalesty Washington had 16 kills and Cates added 11. Sophomore
Kayci Miller had 59 assists and 11 digs while senior
Jordan Grady paced the team with 24 digs.
Methodist (16-9, 8-7) came back and took the early 14-6 lead against Averett. The Monarchs pushed the tempo and came away with the 25-14 win. In the second set, Averett took an 11-7 lead, but the Monarchs scored four straight to tie the set at 11. Methodist had set point at 24-21 before the Cougars pushed it to 24-23, but Wood finished with a kill to win 25-23.
Averett led early in the third set, but Washington's service ace tied the set at 15. Methodist went ahead 20-17 before finishing with the 25-20 win.
Wood led again with 12 kills while Washington added eight. Miller had 32 assists while sophomore
Kelsey Yates had eight digs and Grady added seven.
The Monarchs will host N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7 pm in their final regular season home match.
