Methodist Volleyball Splits in USA South Action

Monarchs support breast cancer awareness with Dig Pink

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team hosted a USA South quad match on Saturday with matches against Christopher Newport University and Ferrum College. The Monarchs lost to CNU 0-3 (16-25, 21-25, 16-25) before coming back to beat Ferrum 3-2 (32-34, 25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11).

The first set was close early but Christopher Newport put together four straight points late to finish with the 16-25 win. The Monarchs jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the second set on a kill from sophomore Jalesty Washington. The Captains came back and tied the set at 16 but Methodist regained the lead. Christopher Newport took the lead at 19-20 and finished with the 21-25 victory. The third set was back and forth with seven ties early. Christopher Newport took the 13-18 advantage before closing out the match with the 16-25 win.

Freshman Stephanie Wood led the Monarchs with nine kills while sophomore setter Kayci Miller had 18 assists. Sophomore Kelsey Yates paced the team with seven digs.

In the second match for the Monarchs, the team started off by dedicating the match to breast cancer survivors. A number of survivors were in attendance and most of the crowd was decked out in pink as a show of support for the cause.

The Monarchs opened up with an early lead, but both teams were battling points throughout the first set. Methodist had set point on three different occasions but it was Ferrum who finished up with the 32-34 win. In the second set, Methodist came from behind and used a couple of runs late in the set to pull away with the 25-17 victory. During the third set, the score was tied eight different times all before the Monarchs took the lead at 12-11 on the second of three consecutive kills by senior Taylor Cates. The Monarchs finished off the set with the 25-20 win.

Both teams were exchanging points in the fourth set but Ferrum scored six straight points to take the 18-15 lead. The Monarchs moved within 20-22, but the Panthers closed with the 21-25 win to push the match to five sets. Methodist made a strong statement jumping out to an early 5-0 lead and led 13-5 after an ace by Miller. Ferrum scored four points late, but the Monarchs called a timeout and senior Kelly Shipkowski earned the final kill for the 15-11 win.

Wood led both teams with 26 kills in the match. Washington added 16 and Cates finished with 12. Miller had 60 assists and 20 digs while senior Jordan Grady had 14 digs.

The Monarchs' next match will be at Sweet Briar Oct. 9 at 5 pm.
