FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's basketball team scored the first four points of the game and kept Newport News Apprentice from ever gaining the lead as they took the 74-55 win.
Methodist (2-3) jumped out to the 10-2 lead after a jumper from freshman
Christina Schrader. The Builders (3-2) tied the game at 24 and 25, but the Monarchs finished the first half on a 13-1 run to lead 38-26 at the break.
The Monarchs maintained control throughout the second half leading by as many as 23 points as they cruised to the 74-55 victory. Apprentice was dominant inside with more than half of their points coming in the paint, but Methodist out rebounded the Builders 38-36.
Methodist junior
Adriana Wilson led the Monarchs with 20 points while junior
Dawn Sanderson added 18 points and six rebounds. Senior
Dezzire Gilliard led with seven boards.
LaTorya Grimes paced the Builders with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Apprentice will face off against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the second game of the MU Cross Creek InnKeeper Turkey Shootout. Methodist will be back on Sunday to take on Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
