FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist Monarchs lost their first set, but came back and won three straight to advance to the USA South Conference Tournament Semifinal. Methodist defeated Ferrum 3-1 (25-27, 25-12, 25-18, 27-25).
Ferrum (16-19) jumped out to the early lead in the first set, but the Monarchs came back and took the lead after freshman
Stephanie Wood scored eight straight points. The Panthers tied the set at 24 and went on to take the 25-27 win. Methodist cruised through the second set finishing with the 25-12 win to tie the match at one.
The third set was back and forth early before Methodist built the 17-13 advantage. The Monarchs finished with the 25-18 win. In the fourth set, Methodist led 5-1 early before the match was tied at 11 and 13. Ferrum went ahead, but the Monarchs tied the set at 23. Ferrum had set point at 23-24 but the Monarchs tied it up at 24. The set was tied again at 25 before the Monarchs finished with kills from sophomore
Jalesty Washington and
Taylor Cates to win the set 27-25.
Washington led the team with 15 kills while Wood finished with 10.
Kayci Miller had 43 assists and nine digs. Sophomore
Kelsey Yates also had nine digs while senior
Jordan Grady finished with eight. Wood added five aces and two solo blocks.
The Monarchs advance to the semifinal against top seeded Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. on Friday.
