Greensboro Defeats Methodist Football

Erik Teague threw for nearly 200 yards

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greensboro College used a huge third quarter to cruise past the Monarchs 42-20 Saturday night.

The score was tied 7-7 at halftime after the Pride opened the scoring in the first quarter and Methodist came back with a five-yard touchdown run from freshman John Flanagan in the second quarter.

Greensboro came out firing in the third quarter and put together three consecutive first downs before finishing the 52-yard drive on a four-yard run from quarterback Seth Adams. The Monarchs were forced to put on their next two possessions while the Pride picked away at Methodist moving ahead 28-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Adams added his third rushing touchdown to start the fourth quarter, before the Monarchs responded. Freshman Grady Hart gave Methodist good field position at the Greensboro 41-yard line after a 33-yard return and an offside penalty. Methodist quarterback Erik Teague completed two passes to get into the red zone and Jason Layton finished it off with a two-yard run for another Monarch touchdown.

The Methodist defense forced the Pride to punt and Methodist drove back down the field thanks in large part to a 46-yard pass from Teague to freshman Curtis Maheu. Teague finished the drive with a five-yard run to move the Monarchs within 15 points with 3:21 to go, but Greensboro countered with another touchdown to seal the 42-20 win.

Teague finished 17-for-30 for 196 yards passing while Maheu caught four passes for 90 yards and Hart caught four passes for 51 yards. Flanagan led the Monarchs' running game with 73 yards on 10 carries. Eric Blalock, Brian Leary and Blake Brown had five solo tackles and an assist a piece to lead the Monarchs while Demory Williams and Trent Strickland each had an interception.

Adams led the Pride on 17-for-22 passing for 225 yards while Antwan Thorpe picked up 60 rushing yards.Devon Morrison had 6.5 tackles on defense.

The Monarchs will finish out the regular season at home next Saturday when they host Christopher Newport at 1 pm.
