FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Thomas R. and Elizabeth E. McLean Foundation is pleased to announce the 2008-09 Methodist University Coach of the Year Award. The Foundation will recognize an outstanding head coach for his or her service during the past year. Nominations will be accepted through June 25 with the award to be presented during Methodist University's opening convocation Sept. 7.
Purpose
Methodist University recognizes that its ongoing commitment to a campus-wide culture of excellence extends to all areas of its campus. It is, therefore, appropriate to identify and recognize athletic head coaches who have shown a commitment to excellence in the knowledge of their discipline, method of instruction, attitude, and interaction with students, both on and off the field. The McLean Foundation Coach of the Year Award is Methodist University's highest athletic coaching award.
Criteria
The McLean Foundation Coach of the Year Award is given each year to the full-time Methodist University head coach who has demonstrated outstanding achievement during the year in the following areas:
1. 1. Team Athletic Performance. Outstanding team performance to include any conference, regional and/or national championships or rankings.
2. 2. Team Sportsmanship. The team will display exemplary good sportsmanship.
3. 3. Team Academic Performance. The coach will have a team that performs well in the classroom at a rate considered outstanding by the selection committee.
4. 4. Team Community Service. The team will show a record of meaningful multiple community service/volunteer activities throughout the year.
5. 5. Personal Contribution. The coach will show evidence of campus and departmental event participation, as well as being active in their respective coaches' professional association at the conference, regional and/or national level.
6. 6. Recruitment and Retention. The coach will manage their sport in such a way to show outstanding recruit/retention numbers in their program.
7. 7. Conduct. The coach will abide by and not have any violations of NCAA rules or Methodist University policies.
Only current Methodist University (MU) head coaches with a minimum of three years head coaching experience at MU will be eligible for the award. A head coach may only win the award once in every four year period. The award will be funded on an annual basis by the McLean Foundation and will carry a monetary award to the winner as well as a plaque.
Process
Each year, the Methodist University Athletic Director (AD) will provide the opportunity for individuals to nominate a Methodist University head coach to receive this award. Nominations will be accepted by the Athletic Department through June 25, 2009.
The following general rules apply:
1. 1. The coach can be self-nominated or nominated by anyone either inside or outside of the campus community.
2. 2. Each nominee will be required to submit an essay of 1,000 words or less regarding his or her qualifications for this award and have submitted no more than two signed letters of support/recommendation from their student-athletes or peers for the selection committee to review.
3. 3. Only current MU coaches are eligible for the award.
4. 4. A new nomination for a coach must occur each year and be turned into the Athletic Director's Office prior to June 25 of each year.
5. 5. There is no limit as to how many times a coach can be nominated.
Awarding
The President of Methodist University will appoint a four-person committee each year from outside of the Athletic Department to make the Coach of the Year selection. Two of the committee members will come from the faculty and two will come from the staff of the University. The Athletic Director will serve as a consultant at the committee's request and will not have a vote in the outcome of the selection process.
The committee will meet in July to review applications and make their selection. Nominees will be considered by the selection committee on that year's accomplishments by the team/coach, not a body of work over his/her career or several years. Only one coach will be selected each year. The committee will be sensitive to gender and sport balance each year in selecting the winner.
The winner will be announced in mid-August of each year and the award will be presented at the Fall Convocation by a representative of the Foundation. If the representative is not able to attend or so chooses, the award will be presented by the President of Methodist University or his/her designee. The award will carry a monetary award to the winner as well as a plaque.
