Methodist Volleyball Comes From Behind to Knock Off Greensboro 3-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. - It had been nearly eight years since the Methodist volleyball team had defeated Greensboro College. The Monarchs came from behind Tuesday night to knock off the Pride 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12).

Greensboro (1-9, 0-1) came out strong jumping to an early 11-3 lead. The Monarchs (7-1, 1-0) got things under control and tied the set at 14 on an ace from freshman Stephanie Wood. Both teams battled back and forth with the set tied six more times before the Pride finished with the 25-23 win.

The second set was close once again, but the Monarchs tied the set at 24 on a kill from senior Allison Averitt and sophomore Kelsey Yates came in to serve. She served up the next three points as the Monarchs came up with three straight points to win 26-24.

The Monarchs came back and cruised to an early 7-1 lead in the third set. Greensboro cut the lead to 12-8, but Methodist stayed strong to take the 23-16 advantage on an ace from sophomore Courtney Benton The Pride went on a 6-1 run to push the set to 24-22, but the Monarchs won the set on a ball handing error by the Pride.

In the fourth set the Monarchs were down early 1-7, but tied the set at 10. Methodist and Greensboro exchanged points before the set was tied at 23-23. The Pride won the next two points to tie the match at 2-2.

Greensboro led early in the fifth set, but the Monarchs tied the set at four and six before taking the 9-8 lead. Methodist went ahead 11-9 forcing Greensboro to call a timeout. Wood had another ace to give the Monarchs a 13-9 lead. The Pride pushed the score to 14-12, but Methodist took the match victory on a Greensboro error.

Sophomore Jalesty Washington led the team with 18 kills while Wood and senior Taylor Cates finished with 12 a piece. Sophomore Kayci Miller led the team with 49 assists while senior Jordan Grady had 17 digs while Benton had 15 digs and sophomore Kelsey Yates added 14. The Monarchs as a team finished with 10 service aces in the match.

Methodist will host a USA South Tri-Match on Saturday when they take on Shenandoah and Averett.
