Methodist Volleyball Splits in Conference Play

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team opened up the USA South tri-match with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) win over Shenandoah but dropped the final match of the day 0-3 (21-25, 13-25, 20-25) to Averett.

In the first match, Methodist and Shenandoah (6-2, 0-2) opened the first set trading points. With Shenandoah up 12-11, Methodist senior Jordan Grady took over serving and helped the Monarchs to an 11-0 run to give Methodist the 22-12 lead. The Monarchs finished off the set with an ace from sophomore Kelsey Yates to win 25-14. The Hornets kept it close early in the second set, but Methodist ran away with it late five straight points to go up 22-10. Methodist won the second set 25-13. Neither team took control early in the third set, but the Monarchs slowly built their lead before Methodist freshman Hayley Williams finished up with two kills to help the Monarchs to a 25-15 win.

Freshman Stephanie Wood led the Monarchs with 10 kills while sophomore Jalesty Washington added eight. Sophomore setter Kayci Miller dished out 31 assists while Grady had 11 digs in the match.

Averett and Methodist went to battle early in the first set. The Cougars (10-2, 3-0) took an early 4-1 lead, but Methodist (8-2, 2-1) battled back to take the 6-4 lead on a kill from Wood. The score was tied on four different occasions, but Averett went to set point at 20-24. Senior Taylor Cates had a kill to keep the Monarchs alive, but the Cougars came back to finish 21-25. In the second set, Averett led 6-8 before going on a 9-0 run to take control. The Monarchs could not recover as the Cougars went on to win 13-25. Methodist bounced back in the third set and took the 8-5 lead. Averett would not go away, but the Monarchs led 18-15 after a Cougar service error. Averett came back on another run to regain the lead and finished with the 20-25 win.

Cates led the Monarchs with 10 kills while Wood finished with nine. Miller had 32 assists while Yates led the defense with nine digs.

The Monarchs will be back in action tomorrow at Greensboro when they take on Christopher Newport and Ferrum.
