Volleyball Splits With Christopher Newport and Ferrum

Jalesty Washington finishes with 16 kills against the Panthers

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Methodist started out with a loss to Christopher Newport 0-3 (15-25, 15-25, 16-25) but came back and knocked off Ferrum 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 17-25).

Methodist and Christopher Newport (11-3, 4-0) exchanged points early in the first set, but the Captains went on a run to jump out to a 10-4 lead. The Monarchs tried to battle back, but Christopher Newport finished with the 25-15 win. The Captains dominated the second set winning by the same score 25-15. In the third set, Methodist senior Laura Gilbert opened up with a block, but Christopher Newport jumped ahead and took the 25-16 win for the 3-0 match.

Senior Taylor Cates led the Monarchs with six kills while sophomore Jalesty Washington had five. Sophomroe Kayci Miller had 19 assists while senior Jordan Grady had seven digs and sophomore Kelsey Yates added six.

The Monarchs opened up fast against Ferrum jumping out to an early lead and cruising to the 25-17 win. Methodist kept up the pressure in the second set and defeated the Panthers 25-21. Ferrum came back in the third set and jumped out to an 16-22 lead, but the Monarchs battled back to push the set to 23-24. Ferrum finished with the 23-25 win to push the match to the fourth set. Methodist came out firing in the fourth set and won 25-17 to win 3-1.

Washington led the team with 16 kills while freshman Stephanie Wood had 14. Miller had 45 assists and 11 digs while Grady came back with 30 digs.

The Monarchs will host Meredith on Wednesday at 7 pm.
