Monarchs Outlast Meredith

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist battled Meredith for five sets to finish with the 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 25-16, 16-25, 19-17) win.

Meredith opened up with a 2-5 lead in the first set before the Monarchs went on an 8-1 run to take the lead. The Monarchs cruised to the 25-18 win. In the second set, Meredith took the advantage and jumped out to the 11-19 lead. The Avenging Angels reached set point at 13-23, but the Monarchs tried to make a run scoring four straight before Meredith finished with the 17-25 win.

In the third set, the Monarchs came from behind to take a 15-8 lead over the Angels. Methodist finished up with the 25-16 win. The Monarchs led early in the fourth set, but Meredith came back and tied the set at 12. The Angels went on an 8-0 run to take the 13-20 lead. They finished up with the 16-25 win to push the match to five.

Meredith scored the first three points of the fifth set, but Methodist freshman Stephanie Wood got the Monarchs on the board with a kill on the assist from sophomore Kayci Miller. Methodist came back and tied the set at seven. Miller registered a service ace to give the Monarchs the 8-7 lead and the teams switched sides. The score was tied at 10 before Methodist went ahead 13-10. Methodist had match point at 14-13, but Meredith came back with a kill to stay alive. The Monarchs had match point again at 15-14 before Meredith had match point at 15-16 and 16-17 but Methodist responded each time. Methodist sophomore Jalesty Washington picked up a kill to give Methodist the 18-17 lead and Miller finished things off with an ace to give Methodist the 19-17 win.

Wood led the Monarchs with 17 kills while Washington and senior Taylor Cates had nine a piece. Miller had 36 assists and 12 digs while senior Jordan Grady led with 14 digs.

The Monarchs will travel to Peace on Saturday to face the Pacers and Mary Baldwin at 2 and 4 pm.
