FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's basketball team led by as many as 12 points, but Averett came from behind to knock off the Monarchs 63-61.
Averett University (7-4, 4-2) used a 15-3 rally late in the second half to tie the game at 57 with 1:35 to play. Mette Scheiman drained a 3-pointer to give the Cougars the lead. The Monarchs (7-7, 3-4) sent Averett to the free throw line and Averett led 63-59. Methodist senior
Dezzire Gilliard cut the lead to two with free throws and the Monarchs got the ball back with 10 seconds to play, but could not get a shot to fall for the Cougars to hold on for the 63-61 win.
Averett took the 18-11 lead in the first half, but Methodist came back to take the 24-23 lead with 58 seconds to go on two free throws from Gilliard. Averett closed the half with the 25-24 lead with two free throws of their own.

Michaela Myers tied the school record with six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points to pace the Monarchs. Gilliard added 14 points with nine rebounds and freshman
Jackie Lyles scored 10 points.
Averett had three players in double figures led by Scheiman's 14 points.
The Monarchs will host Mary Baldwin on Saturday at 2 p.m.
