Methodist Women Pick Up USA South Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's basketball team sought revenge on Saturday earning a 71-66 win over Mary Baldwin after losing on the road earlier this season.

The Monarchs (8-7, 4-4) came out firing early to take the 10-4 lead on a layup from freshman Jackie Lyles, but Mary Baldwin (4-7, 3-5) came back to lead 15-12 with 13:01 to go in the first half. The score was tied on seven different occasions during the half before Methodist took the 33-29 lead at the break.

The Squirrels tied the game at 37 early in the second half before the Monarchs went on an 11-1 run to lead 48-40. A free throw from senior Dezzire Gilliard gave Methodist their largest lead of the game at 69-44 with 1:29 remaining. Mary Baldwin tried to make a comeback, but the Monarchs held them off for the 71-66 win.

Lyles led the Monarchs with 17 points while freshman Christina Schrader added 16 points. Junior Adriana Wilson scored 12 points with eight rebounds.

Sabrina Desper and Kara Hawkins scored 16 points a piece for Mary Baldwin.

Methodist will travel to N.C. Wesleyan on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
