FERRUM, Va. - The Methodist volleyball team traveled to Ferrum College for matches against the Panthers and Christopher Newport University on Friday.
The Monarchs opened up with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-14) win over Ferrum. The Panthers opened with the 1-4 lead over Methodist, but the Monarchs bounced back and took the 5-4 lead behind the serving of
Stephanie Wood. Methodist cruised through the set earning the final two kills from
Jalesty Washington to win 25-14. The second set was back and forth before Methodist went on a 7-0 run midway through the set to lead 12-7. The Panthers fought back late, but the Monarchs prevailed 25-19.
It was all Methodist in the third set as they finished with the 25-14 win. The Monarchs earned three aces in the set including the final point on an ace from Wood.
Wood led the team with 11 kills and Washington added 10. Miller dished out 29 assists and
Hillary McPhatter led the team with five digs.
In the second match of the day, Methodist dropped a three-set match to No. 6 Christopher Newport (12-25, 11-25, 17-25). The Captains jumped out to the 2-8 lead in the first set, before the Monarchs cut the lead to three at 6-9. Christopher Newport responded with a 1-7 run to pull away. Methodist moved within three again in the third set at 6-9, but the nationally ranked Captains took the 11-25 win.
The Monarchs battled in the third set to cut the lead to five at 14-19, but Christopher Newport finished with the 17-25 win to move to 17-1 on the season.
Wood and Washington finished with seven kills a piece for Methodist. Miller had 19 assists and nine digs to pace the team.
Methodist will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Salem College for a 7 p.m. match.
