Monarchs Finish Regular Season on Nine Game Winning Streak

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team successfully finished the regular season on a nine-match winning streak after earning two wins on Saturday. The Monarchs defeated Mary Baldwin College 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-5) and beat Peace College 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23).

Methodist (19-11, 10-8) clinched the fourth seed in the USA South Tournament after tying Averett University, but holding the tiebreaker.

In the first match of the day, the Monarchs dominated earning three quick wins. Methodist led by as many as 13 points before finishing with the 25-11 win. Methodist opened the second set with a 5-0 lead behind Kayci Miller's serving and finished with the 25-13 victory. The Monarchs had just one hitting error in the third set as they cruised to the 25-5 win.

Lauren Bramble led the team with 13 kills while Jalesty Washington added 11 kills. Miller had 27 assists and five aces. Hillary McPhatter paced the team with 12 digs.

In the final match of the day, Methodist held just a two point advantage at 12-10 before going on a 7-1 run to increase their lead. The Monarchs finished the set with a kill from Washington to earn the 25-17 win. Peace held the 18-20 lead in the second set before Washington had a kill and Wood served five points to help the Monarchs to the 24-20 lead. Peace battled back to move within one at 24-23, but a Pacer error gave Methodist the 25-23 win. The third set was tied against at 20, 21 and 22, but the Monarchs finished strong with the 25-23 win to clinch the match.

Washington led the team with 19 kills and Bramble had 11 kills while Wood finished with 10. Miller dished out 38 assists and McPhatter finished with 18 digs.

As the fourth seed in the USA South Tournament, Methodist will host Averett on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round.
