FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist University volleyball team came out firing to take the 1-0 lead before Guilford won the next two sets. The Monarchs bounced back to win 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12).
The first set was six times before Methodist pulled away late behind the serving of
Lauren Bramble. The Monarchs finished with the 25-21 win on a kill from
Jalesty Washington. Guilford came back and jumped out to a 5-11 lead in the second set before finishing with the 18-25 win.
It was all Quakers in the third set as they opened up with a 1-7 lead and cruised to the 18-25 victory. Methodist fought back in the fourth set and after a tied game at six,
Stephanie Wood served up three consecutive aces to give Methodist the 9-6 lead. The Monarchs led by as many as nine, but Guilford rallied late in the set. Methodist finished with the 25-23 win capitalizing on a Guilford error.
Forcing the match to five sets for just the second time this season, the Monarchs trailed 4-6 early. After a Methodist timeout,
Hayley Williams earned a kill and
Ryanne Greer picked up an ace to tie the set. The Monarchs went ahead 8-6, but the Quakers came right back and tied it again. A block from
Kayci Miller and
Morgan Hauck put the Monarchs up 11-8 and forced the Guilford timeout. Guilford pushed the score to 13-12 before Washington and Williams finished with the final two kills to help the Monarchs to the 15-12 win.
Bramble led the team with 14 kills while Washington added 13 and Williams had 11. Miller finished with 40 assists and 15 digs.
Hillary McPhatter led the team with 18 digs.
The Monarchs will be back in action at Greensboro on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
