NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Methodist football team closed out the 2010 season with a 49-10 loss to Christopher Newport.
The Captains opened the game with an eight play touchdown drive to take the 7-0 lead. The Methodist offense drove back down into CNU territory reaching the 21-yard line on an 11-yard rush by
Corey McGuire. Quarterback
Travis Murphy picked up three more yards, but the offense stalled setting up
Tyler Mosko's 35-yard field goal.
Christopher Newport responded with another touchdown to take the 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Captains added three touchdowns in the second quarter to build the 35-3 advantage at halftime. With the CNU defense preventing the Monarchs from getting out of their own territory until late in the third quarter when quarterback
John Glenn led the Monarchs to the CNU-35 yard line before being intercepted at the 17.
A 45-yard punt return by
Matthew Phifer early in the fourth quarter set up the offense at the CNU-29 yard line, but a Methodist fumble gave the ball back to the Captains. Methodist had another opportunity midway through the quarter when Glenn used three consecutive completions to reach the CNU-2 yard line. McGuire finished the drive with a touchdown and Mosko's extra point left the Monarchs trailing 49-10.
Glenn finished 8-for-20 passing for 89 yards while Murphy was 2-for-8 for 22 yards passing and added a team-high 39 yards rushing.
Tim Howard led the Methodist defense with seven tackles while
Jacob Hunt added six.
Seven Methodist seniors finished their career at Christopher Newport while the head coach Jim Sypult finished his career at the helm of the Monarchs.
