FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - LaGrange College held off the Methodist University women's basketball team to take the 68-43 win in the final game of the 2010 InnKeeper Turkey Shootout.
After the first six minutes of play, Methodist held a 6-3 lead. The Monarchs were ahead 12-10 midway through the half, before LaGrange's Katie Covington hit two free throws to tie the game with 9:34 to play. The Panthers scored the next basket to take the lead and never looked back as they built an 11 point advantage at halftime leading 34-23.
LaGrange came out firing in the second half and went ahead 57-35, but Methodist responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 16 on free throws from
Dawn Sanderson with 6:58 to play. The Panthers finished the game on an 11-2 run to earn the 68-43 win.
Sanderson led the Monarchs with 12 points and eight rebounds while
Jackie Lyles scored 10 points and added seven rebounds.
Sanderson was named to the Turkey Shootout All-Classic team along with LaGrange's Covington (MVP) and Elizabeth Williams, Virginia Wesleyan's Kristen Blalock and Maryville's Janell Menard.
Methodist will be back in action on Wednesday when they kick off USA South Athletic Conference play by hosting Greensboro at 7 p.m.
