GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Methodist women's basketball team jumped out to a quick 15-2 lead in the first half, but Guilford came from behind in the second half to earn the 70-63 win over the Monarchs.
Methodist opened the game on a 15-2 run through the first five minutes of play. The Quakers responded with eight straight points to close the gap to five, but the Monarchs maintained the advantage until Guilford took a one point lead at 26-25 with 3:16 left to play in the half. The game was tied again at 28 before Methodist's
Iesha Hayes scored a layup to give Methodist the 30-28 lead at the break.
Guilford opened the second half with two 3-pointers to take the 34-30 lead. The Quakers extended their lead to six at 38-32, but the Monarchs'
Emily Huneycutt drained the three to close the lead back to three. Methodist cut the lead to two on two different occasions, before Guilford went back up by eight.
Dawn Sanderson converted on two free throws with 48 seconds to play to cut the lead to four, but Guilford converted down the stretch finishing with the 70-63 win.
Huneycutt led the Monarchs with 17 points on four 3-pointers while Sanderson added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Jackie Lyles led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.
Jazlyn Gibbbs paced the Quakers with 21 points.
Methodist will be back in action next weekend when they host Shenandoah and Mary Baldwin Dec. 11-12.
