MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Methodist softball team had the lead in both games over Cabrini College Sunday, but the Cavaliers came back to win 5-4 and 3-2 over the Monarchs.

Cabrini jumped out to the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after capitalizing on two Methodist errors. The Monarchs came back and tied the game in the top of the second after Katie Byrd reached on an error and Natalie Drum and Jordan Adams picked up singles.

Methodist took the lead in the fifth after Crystal Metzger sparked a rally with a one-out single. Metzger moved to second on Kalyn Howard's sacrifice and scored on Byrd's double. The Cavaliers countered in the sixth with two unearned runs.

Metzger finished 2-for-3 for the Monarchs. Emily Beck went the distance in the circle scattering seven hits with one earned run.

Liz Zimmer earned the win for Cabrini.

It was Methodist who struck first in the second game when Adams had a lead-off walk in the bottom of the third. Adams stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice from Alyssa Hara before scoring on a triple from Byrd. Methodist pitcher Alex Bass had a no-hitter going until the fifth when Cabrini's Mary Kate Smith singled, but the Monarchs held the 1-0 lead going into the sixth.

Angela Shookster tied the game for the Cavaliers with a two-strike home run in the sixth inning. Neither team could break the tie in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. Runners were stranded in the eighth before Cabrini scored two unearned runs in the top of the ninth.

Methodist opened the bottom of the ninth with Byrd on second and she advanced to third on a wild pitch. A single from Drum scored Byrd, but the Monarchs could not close the gap as Cabrini held on for the 3-2 win.

Bass finished the complete game giving up three hits in nine innings. Cortney Kerns paced the Monarchs offensively going 2-for-3 at the plate with two triples.

Marcelle Crist picked up the win for the Cavaliers.

The Monarchs will host Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday in their home opener beginning at 2 p.m.
