Monarchs Sweep Old Westbury

Darci Martin hit 2-for-3 with five RBI in game one

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team picked up two wins on Saturday over Old Westbury College. The Monarchs cruised to the 16-2 and 9-0 win in five innings.

Methodist ran out to the 9-0 lead in the first inning capitalizing on nine hits. Darci Martin had two hits in the inning to earn four RBI. The Monarchs added seven additional runs in the second inning sparked by a lead-off triple from Katie Byrd. Byrd came back up to bat and added a bases-clearing double to tack on three RBI. The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the third, but Methodist finished with the 16-2 win.

Alex Bass earned the win in the circle pitching three innings with seven strikeouts. Heather Anderson finished with two scoreless innings of relief.

The Monarchs picked up where they left off in game two with five runs in the first inning. Martin, Natalie Drum, Crystal Metzger, Kristina Wolfrom and Katie Scheller each had a RBI in the inning. Methodist added an unearned run in the second and tacked on three in the fourth to win 9-0.

Lysuelle Slaughter earned the win in four innings pitched. Emily Beck finished the fifth inning with three straight strikeouts.

The Monarchs will head to Panama City Beach, Fla. on Monday to compete in the NFCA Leadoff Classic next week.
